Smooth Operator

Unfortunately style doesn't always supersede efficiency when it comes to construction, hence the modern phenomenon of homes with no molding and popcorn ceilings. Builders prefer popcorn ceilings because they don't require the extra effort of smoothing plaster, sanding, and painting; with a popcorn ceiling it's shake, spray, and go. No, this entire post isn't a rant against modern construction techniques. I promise. In fact, I like popcorn (with a movie)... I just don't want it on my ceilings. So, if you're hankering for a popcorn purge this is the post for you!

This is a simple project which can be completed over a weekend with very dramatic results. Head to your local paint or hardware store and pick up these supplies:
  • Spray Bottle for water
  • 12" Hyde drywall Taping Knife
  • Zinsser Smart Prime Primer
  • Wooster 1.5" Angle Sash Trim Brush
  • 3M Fine Grit Sanding Sponge
  • Drop Cloth
  • Roller Kit
  • Ceiling Paint
Now you're ready to get started- crank up the tunes and get going! First, spray a small area of the ceiling with water, yield your taping knife and scrape the wet popcorn like you're flipping a pancake. Thanks to the flexibility of the taping knife the popcorn will come off in sheets and you shouldn't have any gouges in the drywall.

When you've finished scraping the ceiling sand any rough spots with your sanding sponge. Grab your paintbrush and primer and give your new smooth ceiling one to two coats. Allow the primer to dry and apply two coats of paint. Grab a refreshing beverage (see below for this week's signature cocktail- the Moscow Mule) and admire your skills. Oh yeah, you're good.
