Smooth Operator

Unfortunately style doesn't always supersede efficiency when it comes to construction, hence the modern phenomenon of homes with no molding and popcorn ceilings. Builders prefer popcorn ceilings because they don't require the extra effort of smoothing plaster, sanding, and painting; with a popcorn ceiling it's shake, spray, and go. No, this entire post isn't a rant against modern construction techniques. I promise. In fact, I like popcorn (with a movie)... I just don't want it on my ceilings. So, if you're hankering for a popcorn purge this is the post for you!

This is a simple project which can be completed over a weekend with very dramatic results. Head to your local paint or hardware store and pick up these supplies:
  • Spray Bottle for water
  • 12" Hyde drywall Taping Knife
  • Zinsser Smart Prime Primer
  • Wooster 1.5" Angle Sash Trim Brush
  • 3M Fine Grit Sanding Sponge
  • Drop Cloth
  • Roller Kit
  • Ceiling Paint
Now you're ready to get started- crank up the tunes and get going! First, spray a small area of the ceiling with water, yield your taping knife and scrape the wet popcorn like you're flipping a pancake. Thanks to the flexibility of the taping knife the popcorn will come off in sheets and you shouldn't have any gouges in the drywall.

When you've finished scraping the ceiling sand any rough spots with your sanding sponge. Grab your paintbrush and primer and give your new smooth ceiling one to two coats. Allow the primer to dry and apply two coats of paint. Grab a refreshing beverage (see below for this week's signature cocktail- the Moscow Mule) and admire your skills. Oh yeah, you're good.

The Talented Mr. Reed

In this age of instant fame via social media it can be a little unnerving knowing you're on YouTube. Visions immediately come to mind of possible humiliation (was that beer chugging contest captured on an iphone and posted to the internet much to the delight of thousands of our not-so-closest friends? Oh yes friend. Yes it was.) Occasionally, however, we are blessed with the gift of a young talent such as Michael Reed of Michael Reed Films. Michael is a young up-and-coming videographer who is rising to the top of the ranks in the wedding world.

Let's all keep an eye on this one...

...at least if you're watching his videos it will spare some poor soul one more hit of YouTube humiliation

Add a little Flourish

We are very excited to announce our first bit of "press" courtesy of Southern Flourish Magazine- check out their site at http://www.southernflourish.com

Southern Flourish is a hip online magazine which features the very best of the South's endless supply of young talent. We love the feature on Charleston's cocktail scene, in fact, we might just have to create a signature cocktail of our own... care for a Gold Finch Fizz anyone? We're definitely hooked on this hot little magazine and can't wait to dive into the rest of the articles. Thanks to Kate Hash for giving us our first promotion and last but not least, we owe a big thanks to Ben Williams for his amazing photography; without his talent and encouragement this little clever birdie would still be incubating.

Stay tuned for more... including "How To" creations, last minute party tips, and crafty inspirations to style your life!
